Upinder Randhawa is an established film maker and media figure. Commencing his career working for a number of Asian Community Radio Stations, his media career came into further prominence when operating as a Presenter for UK lifestyle channel Sangat TV.
He was seen to be courageously covering live footage of the 2011 England Riots within the West Midlands. His fast-paced guerrilla journalism style earned him a great deal of acclaim in several newspapers and on mainstream television. Upinder's service to the media during this time was commended by PM David Cameron in the House of Commons for his commitment to social responsibility. He was also featured in 10 Heroes of the London Riots in New York’s Time Magazine. Upinder was voted in among DesiClub.com’s Top 50 Coolest Desis of 2011.
Upinder travelled to Vancouver to carry out his acting debut in the award-winning Punjabi film Mirza: The Untold Story (2012), playing a character role, before propelling himself further and becoming a film producer. This production formed the foundation of his film career, where he was fortunate to have the mentoring and guidance from well-known film director Baljeet Singh Deo and strengthen his expertise. He went on to collaborate with Baljeet Singh Deo on a subsequent movie project soon afterwards.
A following film in which he also played a character role was Desi Munde (2016), which was shot in both India and England. Upinder not only served as an actor for a character role on set, but was also heavily involved in the UK production team.
Kirdaar, his first literary art production as a Director and Producer, is what he refers to as his ‘film school,’ through which he cultivated and applied the necessary prowess to complete an astonishing production. This film has been widely appreciated and featured at many international film festivals including the prestigious South Asian International Film Festival Canada: the largest South Asian film festival in North America.
Alongside this, Upinder carries out compelling interviews for Punjab2000 with prominent figures within the Asian media industry. Gurdas Maan, Diljit Dosanjh, Waris Brothers, Sanjay Dutt, Asha Bhosle, Sargun Mehta, and Binnu Dhillon amongst others are a few of his most notable interviews.
In 2016, Upinder spearheaded a project set-up for Prime Asia TV Canada, before returning to the U.K. to produce and present shows for a Sky lifestyle channel. He also served as a Channel Head for NewsNumber.com, interviewing many influential figures.
Upinder’s most recent work includes a commercial Directorial debut on his Punjabi Film Drame Waale, starring Harish Verma, Sharon Kaur, Sardar Kamal, Ruby Anam, Hunny Albela and Qaisar Pia amongst other well-known artists. He dynamically operated as an Executive producer while laying out the foundations for the film. He single-handedly oversaw the finalising of the casting, locations and production.
